Our Accelerator curriculum called for breaking our startups into sub-cohorts that would travel through the 4-month experience together. Startups in the same subcohort would have an opportunity to form tight bonds throughout the program. They were not competitors, they were allies.
We needed a better name than “sub-cohort” and remembered: that entrepreneurs are as easy to herd as cats, we love cats, and the internet loves cats too so… We used the term “herd” for our sub-cohorts. And just to make sure everyone got the point we named each herd after a famous cartoon cat. The startups got the message right on day one that we were fun, a bit silly and bend on helping them form relationships with each other to succeed.
And the 30 minutes we spent coming up with the herd names was a blast for the VVM staff :).
